Skin/Mass Surgery

Skin or mass removal surgery may be recommended for pets with soft tissue masses in the skin or subcutaneous tissues. In many cases, an aspirate of a mass may be recommended to determine its nature and whether that particular mass may be malignant or need surgical excision. If cytology is inconclusive or suggestive of a serious condition, surgical removal may be recommended with a biopsy submitted for identification to better guide therapy.

Skin biopsies may also be recommended with skin problems whose underlying cause has not been diagnosed on other testing.

Post-operative care will most often involve antibiotics and monitoring of skin incisions for inflammation or discharge as well as prevention of self-mutilation by the pet.

Referral to specialists such as a dermatologist or oncologist may be recommended on a case-by-case basis.
