Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgery may be recommended for your pet for a variety of reasons, with a varying degree of urgency. Orthopedic surgery, by definition, involves the correction, repair, or removal of one or more of the body's bones or the bones' connective tissues including ligaments, tendons, joint capsules, or cartilage.

Common reasons why orthopedic surgery may be recommended for your pet include fractures, ligament ruptures, vertebral disk compression, and removal of cancers.

Prior to consideration of orthopedic surgery, radiographs, or x-rays, of potential surgical procedures will be recommended to identify precise locations and severity of problem. Post-operative x-rays may also be recommended to be sure surgical repair is adequate.

After orthopedic surgery, your pet may require more intensive aftercare. This care may entail regular dosing with pain medications. Severe restrictions on physical activity and maintenance of bandages or casts may be required. Long-term physical therapy may also be recommended.

Common orthopedic surgical procedures performed at our hospital include fracture repair, cruciate ligament repair, and tumor removal.

More complex or advanced surgery cases may be referred to orthopedic surgeon specialists in our area if it is felt your pet may benefit more from their care than can be provided at our hospital.
