| A serum chemistry profile is a blood test that will measure several important electrolytes, enzymes, and metabolites. This test can be used as a screening tool to detect abnormalities before symptoms arise or as a tool to help diagnose different internal problems.
A chemistry profile may be recommended if your pet shows signs of dehydration, vomiting or diarrhea of unknown cause, increase or decrease in appetite or thirst, significant weight loss or gain, lethargy or many other signs of illness. Potential dysfunction of the liver or kidneys is often diagnosed from this test.
A superchemistry provides the same information as a serum chemistry profile, with the addition of several other enzymes and electrolytes which your doctor may have suspicion to be causing your pet's problems.
The results of the chemistry will be interpreted along with physical examination findings and other laboratory tests to diagnose and best treat your pet's conditions.
