A miniscreen pre-anesthetic chemistry profile is recommended for any patient prior to undergoing sedation or anesthesia for a medical procedure. The blood test will allow your veterinarian to determine if there are any liver, kidney, or blood sugar abnormalities which might preclude your pet from having his scheduled procedure or require additional treatment such as fluids and closer monitoring. A miniscreen can be run in our hospital the day of your pet's procedure without waiting for outside laboratory results.
The test is optional for pets under five years old, but we recommend it as a safety precaution and to establish a baseline should problems arise in the future.
We require the miniscreen for all pets undergoing procedures who are five years old or older because of the higher risk of problems as your pet ages.
We additionally recommend, but do not require, a pre-anesthetic electrocardiograph or ECG .
A miniscreen may also be run for critically ill animals for whom immediate results are required. In that case, fuller blood panels may still be sent to outside laboratory for more detailed evaluation.
