Heartworm disease is an important disease that affects dogs. Heartworm is a blood-borne parasite that is spread through mosquito bites. It is a deadly disease that is however easy to prevent.
Your dog should have a blood test at his annual physical examination to make sure he is clear of heartworm disease. A heartworm antigen test is recommended for dogs who have been regularly on a heartworm preventative and will rule out the adult form of heartworms. A microfilaria test is recommended for dogs who have not been on preventatives regularly and will rule out the immature form of heartworms.
We recommend monthly administration of heartworm preventatives for all dogs year round. The preventative we recommend is called Interceptor. Interceptor is dosed based on your dog's body weight. Interceptor also prevents against other intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.
