Feline Immunideficiency Virus (FIV) is an important disease that can affect all cats.It is spread primarily through bite wounds from other infected cats. FIV is similar to HIV that causes AIDS in humans, but is not transmissible to people. There is no known cure or effective treatment at this time.
A new cat should be tested for FIV before introduction to others. High risk cats include strays, cats that go outside or are exposed to other cats that go outside.
