Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) Testing

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a contagious debilitating virus that can affect all cats.It is primarily spread through direct contact such as in grooming, biting, or sharing drinking or feed dishes with an infected cat. A kitten may also contract the disease from its mother before or after birth.

A new cat should be tested for FeLV before it is introduced to other cats. This is especially important for multi-cat households. Higher risk cats include cats who were stray, at shelters, or who go outside and are not vaccinated against FeLV. Kittens may require more than one testing depending on their age at testing.

All cats that go outside or who are exposed to cats who go outside should be vaccinated against this serious disease.
