A complete blood count (CBC) is a blood test that will help identify potential problems in your pet such as anemia, dehydration, systemic infection, and blood-borne cancers or parasites among others.
A CBC may be used as a screening tool to detect problems before symptoms arise.
A CBC is also indicated when your pet is ill to help determine the severity of the illness and help diagnose potential causes and indicate appropriate treatment.
In a CBC, the number of red blood cells is calculated and differences in cell shape and size noted. This information can identify anemia or dehydration and potential causes of such.
The number of white blood cells is also calculated in addition to a differential count of the various types of white blood cells. Infection, leukemia and immune suppression are among the abnormalities that can be identified with this information.
The results of the CBC will be interpreted along with physical examination findings and results of other laboratory tests to diagnose and best treat your pet's conditions.
